Planning to visit Deoghar this Sawan, or offering jal from home through live darshan? This guide covers everything: Sawan 2026 dates, the Shravani Mela experience, the Sultanganj to Deoghar Kanwar Yatra route, and practical darshan tips that most first timers learn the hard way.
Every year, as the first rains of Shravan touch Jharkhand, something extraordinary begins in the small temple town of Deoghar. Lakhs of saffron clad devotees, the kanwariyas, start walking. Not driving, not riding. Walking. Over 100 kilometres, barefoot for many, carrying Ganga jal on their shoulders, with one name on their lips: Bol Bam.
This is the Shravani Mela of Baba Baidyanath Dham, often called the longest religious fair in the world, running the entire month of Sawan. If you have ever wondered what it feels like, when to go, or how to offer jal without getting lost in the crowd, this guide is for you.
Sawan 2026 Dates: When Does It All Begin?
In 2026, the holy month of Shravan begins on 24 July (as per the North Indian Purnimanta calendar followed at Baidyanath Dham) and continues for a full lunar month.
The most important days are the Sawan Somvars, the Mondays of Shravan, considered the most powerful days for Shiva worship:
- First Sawan Somvar: 27 July 2026
- Second Sawan Somvar: 3 August 2026
- Third Sawan Somvar: 10 August 2026
- Fourth Sawan Somvar: 17 August 2026
On these Mondays, the crowd at Baidyanath Dham multiplies several times over. If your priority is a peaceful darshan, avoid Mondays. If your priority is experiencing the mela at its peak energy, a Sawan Somvar is unforgettable. Just go prepared (more on that below).

Why Baidyanath Dham Is Special: The Story of Ravan’s Devotion
Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, Baidyanath holds a place unlike any other, because its story begins not with a god or a sage, but with Ravan.
The legend goes that Ravan, the mighty king of Lanka and one of Shiva’s greatest devotees, performed severe tapasya in the Himalayas to bring Mahadev himself to Lanka. Pleased, Shiva gave him a Jyotirlinga with one condition. It must not be placed on the ground anywhere along the way, or it would become rooted at that very spot forever.
The devas, alarmed at the thought of Shiva leaving for Lanka, devised a plan. On the way, Ravan felt an irresistible urge to perform sandhya. He handed the linga to a young cowherd standing nearby, Lord Vishnu in disguise, who set it down on the earth. The linga rooted itself instantly. A furious Ravan tried with all his might to uproot it, managing only to press it down with his thumb. That is why the linga at Baidyanath bears a slight depression at the top even today.
Ravan then worshipped Shiva here and, in his devotion, offered his own heads one by one. Shiva, moved, healed him like a vaidya, a physician. And so the lord of this dham came to be called Baidyanath, the Lord who heals.
There is one more thing that makes this temple singular: it is both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha. It is believed that Mata Sati’s heart fell here, which is why the dham is also revered as the Hridaya Peetha, and the linga is lovingly called Kamna Linga, the fulfiller of heartfelt wishes. Nowhere else do Shiva and Shakti reside together in quite this way.
The Kanwar Yatra: Sultanganj to Deoghar, 105 Km of Faith
The heart of Shravani Mela is the kanwar yatra, and it follows a route that has been walked for centuries.
The journey begins at Sultanganj in Bihar, roughly 105 km from Deoghar. Sultanganj is special because here the Ganga flows uttarvahini, northwards, which the shastras consider especially sacred. Kanwariyas take a dip, fill their kanwars (decorated bamboo carriers with pots at both ends) with Ganga jal, and begin the walk to Deoghar.
The rules of the yatra are simple but strict:
- The kanwar must never touch the ground. During rest, it is hung on stands or trees.
- The yatra is done on foot. Most pilgrims walk in slippers or barefoot.
- Devotees stay pure for the journey. No alcohol, no non veg, and many observe complete brahmacharya for the month.
- The greeting on the route is not “hello”. Every kanwariya is addressed as “Bam”, and the air rings with Bol Bam day and night.
Most pilgrims complete the walk in three to four days, resting at the countless camps, dharamshalas, and free langars that line the route through Asarganj, Tarapur, Kumarsar, Suiya, and Goriyari. And then there are the Dak Bams, devotees who take a vow to complete the entire 105 km non stop, without pausing even once, often within 24 hours. When a Dak Bam passes, the crowd itself parts to let them through. Watching one run through the night, drenched in rain and chanting, is a sight you do not forget.
The jal carried from Sultanganj is finally offered on the Kamna Linga at Baidyanath Dham, the completion of the vow. Many devotees then also visit Basukinath temple, about 43 km away, as the yatra is considered incomplete without darshan of Baba Basukinath, who is regarded as the faujdari court to Baidyanath’s diwani.
Darshan During Shravani Mela: What Actually Happens
Here is what most guides will not tell you plainly: during the entire month of Sawan, sparsh darshan (touching the linga) remains suspended because of the crowd. Jal is offered through the arghya system, a channel arrangement through which your jal flows onto the linga. Do not feel disheartened by this. The offering is considered equally complete, and the system exists so that lakhs of devotees can offer jal every single day.
A realistic picture of a mela day:
- The temple opens around 4:00 AM with the kancha jal puja. On Somvars, queues start forming from the previous evening.
- Waiting time in the queue can run from 2 to 3 hours on regular days to 8 to 12 hours or more on Sawan Somvars. The queue often stretches several kilometres through the town, managed with barricades and holding areas.
- Carry minimal belongings. Mobile phones and leather items are not allowed inside. Cloakrooms are available near the entry points, but they get crowded, so it is easier to leave things with a companion or at your lodge.
- Keep your jal container secure and clearly yours. In the press of the crowd, mix ups are common.
- Elderly devotees and those unable to stand in long queues should ask about the special darshan arrangements announced by the district administration each year. Routes and passes change annually, so check locally on arrival.
Where to stay: Deoghar has hundreds of dharamshalas and budget hotels, but during Sawan they fill up weeks in advance. If you are going on a Somvar, book before you leave home. Another option is to stay at Jasidih (the nearest railway junction, 7 km away) and travel in early morning.
How to reach: Jasidih Junction is the nearest major railhead, well connected to Howrah, Patna, and Delhi routes. From Jasidih, autos and buses run to Deoghar round the clock during the mela. Deoghar’s own airport also has flights from major cities now, making a shorter trip possible for those who cannot walk the yatra.
